Katya’s 2022 Marie Claire feature Of Murder and Motherhood was made into a Discovery true crime docuseries.
Straitjackets and Lunch Money was featured on Episode 123 of the Let’s Talk Memoir podcast with Ronit Plank. Katya’s second memoir received an Independent Publisher Book (IPPY) Award in Autobiography/Memoir. Katya was featured on News Channel 12, 3, 11.
She spoke with Brendan O’Meara of the Creative Nonfiction Podcast about crafting her longform story for Atavist Magazine. Katya spoke about Straitjackets and Lunch Money on the California Sun Podcast. Straitjackets and Lunch Money was named one of Alta‘s 16 books to read in September and featured in their Bound Together guide of the best new books on the West.
The San Francisco Chronicle called Straitjackets “incredibly affecting“. Kirkus Reviews called it “harrowing but engrossing” and included it in their February 2024 magazine. River Teeth also had nice things to say. Katya spoke about Straitjackets with The Reluctant Therapist and was invited to speak at Good Morning SLO. She was also on KCLU, KVEC, KCBX, The Bookshop Podcast, the Donna Seebo Show and Journeys of Discovery.
From Chernobyl with Love was awarded the Eric Hoffer Book Award for Academic Press. Chernobyl was on the Bookable Space podcast. Exiled was featured in Alta Journal’s 13 books to read for March and in a Faculti video. Exiled was also featured on the Bookshop Podcast. Katya was featured in the 2023 Bay Area Book Festival roundup, Santa Barbara News-Press and on KCLU.
Katya reported on the difficulty of writing about the war in Ukraine for LitHub. She was profiled in Alta Magazine after winning a Society for Features Journalism Excellence-in-Features Award.
