World Ark 2015: Wars have obvious destructive consequences: People are killed; infrastructure is destroyed; crops are ruined. And often, an influx of disease lies in the wake. The HIV/AIDS epidemic in Africa has been able to spread by piggybacking on many conflicts that destroy or consume much needed resources and push impoverished families over the edge.
World Ark 2015: Heifer International has been helping families move from poverty to self-reliance for more than 70 years. Their willingness to invest in people has brought hope and inspiration to families around the globe. Often these farmers simply lack the capital necessary to get things started. When a farmer with big dreams receives support from Heifer, amazing things can happen.
World Ark 2015: Lawrence Oluka, 66, and his wife Bessy, 57, live in Asanuk Moru Village, Amuria District, in the Eastern Province of Uganda. The couple, who have 10 children and nine grandchildren, have survived through subsistence farming for decades. But, since joining the “Elder’s Concern Uganda” group in their village in 2013 and Heifer Uganda’s “Integrated Community Livelihood Support and Care Systems” project a year later, the family’s standard of living has dramatically improved.
